engine starter as motor?

Guys do you remember if anyone has used an "engine starter" as motor as alternative to wipers?

it cannot be used in simulators ... due to it's huge improper starting amps (150-200 Amps per second ) consuming a full charged big battery in about 15 minutes plus using a help of a very very expensive motor controller to do so ... they always use direct gears which increases the wear and tear in mechanical parts and bearings even with a gearbox with a good chance of loud noise ... they are really bad in this job ... that includes all kinds of starter motor from the smallest in scooters, motorcycles, cars, power generator, ... to the biggest what ever ... sorry :(

I want to add that, even wiper motors are not preferred with all kinds too ... the small ones with two brushes only are the most common used successfully around here ...

thanks for your replay... just a final question... those motors (starters) use 100 amps even when they have to move such a small weight considering moving a seat mover of 2dof?

best regards

Hi fer :
Brief answer is yes ... even with no load ...
it's the design of these motors is actually the problem for not using them here ... due to the small size starter required in any engine ... so all starter motors are 4 brushes of internal 2 coils in parallel thick wires [that means that near zero start up overall impedance ] ... they are made to give there max speed ASAP before engaging the mechanical gears in some cars ... therefore the torque is related to the speed ... plus that at T=0 the ampere drained from the battery source can really exceeds imaginations ... dropping down while the motor rotates faster ... see here some researches are made so if they suites your needs .

I was also thinking as an alternative to wiper motors. Thanks for your comprehensive info! Now, I would not invest any on it.

Rewinding a starter motor isn't beyond the realm of DIY, plus there are places that'll do it for you at relatively low cost, and they'll put on exactly the number of turns and thickness of wire you specify.

I was considering using starter motors but having them rewound with larger gauge (thinner) wire. This way I can customise the motor to whatever power output / current draw I required.
I can get as many starter motors as I like basically for free (scrap yard next door), so they'd be ideal. Plus there's a place that does inexpensive rewinds 5 minutes up the road.

I'm sure there's a use for the 12V starter solenoids as well?

One of my long term goals for my rig is to properly simulate a car's gearbox, including requiring double declutching in older race cars which would lack a synchromesh.
I was considering using a starter solenoid for this. Placing one in the H-shifter which would block the gate to prevent gears from being selected without the clutch first being engaged (or engaged, disengaged, then engaged again in the case of unsynchronized gearboxes).

man, if you success with the rewinding stuff with the starter motor, please let me know, since i have the same issue, i could get starters motors almost for free :D and in this way i would save some money, since getting a nice motor other than a wiper here in mexico is a little expensive
.
