General questions on wheel+pedal building

Postby metallo97 » Fri 28. Mar 2014, 20:04

Hi all, i'm going to build a FFB steering wheel+pedals+shifter and i've got some questions i think you can reply...

So i think i will be using the MJoy16 AVR controller for the wheel, pedals and shifter. The shifter is very simple to do. Two of the three pedals would come from a crappy steering wheel, but i need to do another one...
The most difficult part is creating the steering wheel. I'm gonna use a wiper motor for the force feedback. And now begin the questions...
How do i make a simple potentiometer turn 900°+? Do i have to create some gears?
Then which is the simplest h-bridge? I have an arduino, i think i can simply attach an h-bridge shield and an external power supply and then the signal would come from the software...
Thanks all for the help!

Hello metallo!
You're aiming an ambitious goal! Great!
Among the many points you listed, you will have to drive the torque, not the speed : hence Hbridge won't work! You need more elaborate drive.

Thanks man! I had already seen that, so do you think it's better to go with the AS5045 for the steering wheel?
Better one or two motors? I will use a wiper motor and i think it will gave me lots of torque...

And at last, i want this to be cheap, so nothings very professional... :)

There are many multiturn pot! but quite expensive (~30€) or you can use gears to reduce the range (but you will reduce precision as well).
Prefer cermet track.
Choose linear (non log) 10k pot.

Definitely the pot way it's the cheapest... I think I will search for multi turn one but they're like 10 turns which are very much for a steering wheel!

Maybe the best thing is to place a magnet on the shaft of the motor and the magnet sensor directly in front of him...

But you will only get 360•

Are you sure? I think that with the help of a microcontroller like an arduino, if you reach 360 degrees and it suddendly goes to 0 degrees he would think that it's another turn on the same direction... This would be even easy to program... So i would even need an arduino to control... So, instead of creating a new FFB board i can use the arduino for sending/receiving FFB commands and to send controls for the wheel axis to the MJoy...

It would be easy to program if all the values were consecutives... Your arduino will not see all the values due to refresh and calculation rates!
But it's probably doable...
