how to build a simple 2DoF simulator

Postby rockroyalty » Tue 8. Jan 2013, 20:40

Hi guys, I'm new to this motion simulator thing, and my approach to things is perhaps different to others... I want to make a 2 DoF motion simulator using linear actuators. but that's not where its different. I noticed many people using complicated boards, controllers, and software... the thing is I'm trying to build a simulator for the computer dummy (me). so is there any way of maybe opening the logitech G27 and play with the wiring of left/right steering movement to result in the left and right actuators to move accordingly??? is there a way (maybe via the use of switches) to make this happen without needing to fiddle with software and hardware. this would make the device have a universal application, turn the wheel right, the chair moves right, turn it left, the simulator moves left.

any help would be much appreciated. Regards. Rock

How about this? Can't be more simple. A lever substitutes electronics and motors and everything, Good workout for your arm.....

Seriously *.. You need position controller for the motors in any case, even if you intent to hack a joystick to get values from it.

man, right now i am building my first motion simulator, slow slow, but, i can tell you that your aproach was my first guess, now i can tell you that going that way will cost you more, and the resoults will be pour...

all you need to make your sim working is a couple of pololu cards some potentiometers and there you go... -if you are an electronic geniuous, there are another options - but if not, buy a couple of pololus and safe your wheel and joysticks for your real and grate simulator. really

if you need help in the proces the comunity is grate and really open to help.

best regards

Pololu JRK boards , easy USO commands or the new plug in , 7 wires , one usb cable per board , no code to write.
One board per motor .
Use big 12 v worm gear motors like the eBay Dayton's.
Design a frame you may like. The joyriders , like tronic has shown is good and well balanced, just need to put a motor at the leverage point of each axis. Nice frame for flight, but can be used for race.
or you can adapt a pivot point base under an existing frame like floriske.
Or if you are handy with wood and or steel, designs your own.

thanks guys, but would'nt adding the pololu restrict its usage to PC's... I wanted to make the whole thing compatible with the PS3 for my younger brothers. is there any way other than making it totally software/pololu independent that can make it PS3 compatible?

I'm going to design my own frame. I checked the worm motors on ebay (I live in Queensland, Australia) and they're all little motors, if I use wiper motors instead, which ones do you guys recommend

Worm gear motors here in Australia mate, MotionDave and myself use simular units, complared to a new wiper ($160), they are cheap but not nasty in anyway. (oops ya need a link http://www.motiondynamics.com.au/worm-drive-motors-en/worm-drive-motors.html)
Dont use wipers internals eventually fail or develop big backlash.

thanks mate, will they support the weight though?? are they noisy motors??

no they are very quiet, yes they will support weight, but the frame needs to be properly balanced anyway
and they are VERY strong
