Introducing my planed 2dof sim

Postby Settingz85 » Fri 8. Feb 2013, 20:18

Hello all Sim-freaks out there,

after many weeks of reading through this Forum and endless evenings of planing and drawing i would like to share my ideas with you and
hopefully getting some feedback from some motion sim users.
Before i start sharing pics and other stuff, i would like to introduce myself.

I´m 27 years old and live in germany, northrhine westfalia (so please don´t complain my english-skills. Its been a while since i left school).
Since i was young, i was always into racing and flight sims such as LFS, GTR, IL2 and familiar sims. I always dreamed of having some kind of motion sim, but i believed its unlikely to build one and get it working. Until i found this Forum.

So i started reading and reading, spend some money on the beloved Velleman k8055 card (knowing its not the best solution, but still a good way of starting playing around with electronics)and downloaded the x-sim software. Later on, i bought a 504 watt psu, one 250 watt motor and motordriver. I already did some testing with this combination and it seems to work pretty well.

I started the motion sim in 3 different desings. The first one was hydraulic/pneumatic one, but it turned out to be to expensive(btw a hydraulic machine inside my livingroom would be way to ugly :? ). The second design was a kind of whipper motor design. You may find several whipper design in this forum. But i was never satisfied with the movement provided by whippers. So i started a third design from scratch on, which is now my favourite one.
See pics below.

dont use this images for commercial use

I prefer the design on the first image even if its slightly larger than the second one. The motor torque will be transmitted by using timing belts. I still have to figure out lots of details such as choosing the right pulleys, mounting what kind of pots for position feedback....

I will report any further progress about this project.

Nice project there.
That frame design has been done before a few times.
The last design I saw used 12 v boat winch motors for extra grunt. They ran successfully of the Pololu JRK.
I have also seen this design on a flight sim and he uses big worm gear 12 v motors , about 180 watts each I think and a gear setup.
So what control board and h-bridge are you using then? Still the K8055? The arduino is better and cheap to buy, and it is plugin supported.
What motors are you using ? 12v? 24v ?

No worries about any English issues , I am 39 and live in an English speaking country and still have troubles

Hi Dave,
i´m using the MY1016Z2 Motor. It runs on 24volt and provides 250Watts. It comes with a planetary gear, which brings this motor down to 360rpm@6.65Nm. These values are at average load. Max load is 11.5Nm@315rpm. So far, i have only 1 Motor, just to minimize the financel loss in case that this motor is somehow not useable for sims . The second one will be bought when i need it.
Furthermore, i´m using Devantech DM3 H-bridge driver. I dont see any reason why choosing Pololu boards. Maybe you can give me a reason to buy one
Power for the motors is provided by a 21Amps 24Vollt PSU. This one should provide enough power to run two MY1016Z2 (yeah, i * Psu´s should provide 130%Watts compared to what is really needed  )
Unfortunately i´m still using K8055 board. This board helped me getting an view on how controller cards do their job.
So,yes. I´m planning two use another Controller card such as Arduino. But i´m not very familiar with Arduino. I recently found out, that there already is a newer version "Arduino2". Still not sure how to work with them.
Another option is Thanos AMC1.6 driver. He really did a great job.
The 5volt power for running Driver cards and position feedback pots will be taken directly from an ATX-psu. I already soldered a small circuit board to share the 5 Volts(and for some fuses as well). I will run the motion computer with the same psu.

greetings

ps. a few more pics on how i figured out where to place armrest and things like that.

Greetings, :D
I am using two wheelchair motors rated at 24 volts on my joyrider and I have had problems blowing Pololu 24v20 and 24v23 High Power Motor Drivers. I am interested in your Devontech DM3 H-bridge how much does it cost and any problems with it?

Hi jssmith2307,
never had any problems with the devantech, easy to connect. But im on an early stage with my simulator, never tested it under full load. Anyway, it comes with a huge heatsinker and has a over temperature limiter, current limiter. Bought it here: http://nodna.de/Single-Motor-Controller
for 62€.
Do you know anything about your wheelchair motors(watts, ampere...)? Might be usefull, otherwise you may blow the devantech up as well. ;)
You can find a complete dm3 documentation at http://nodna.de/MD03-Motor-Driver-Devantech.

Update 03.03.2013

Just i minor update to this project.
After some research and reading through this forum, i decided to buy an Arduino UNO. This unit should replace the K8055 board.
Still waiting for Carpenter to build the wooden arches (cant build them as precise as i want them to be). Hopefully he gets them done during the next week. Furthermore, i did some small changes to the design. Main focus was on the mechanics inside the frame and the alluminium frame for armrests, screen etc.

just a minor update to this project.
Recently received the wooden arches (as you can see in CAD-renderings). Furthermore, i did some testing with the PSU, but it turned out, that my PSU is somehow not useable for high voltpeaks, which were generated by the motor. Solving this issue is very complicated and i cant guarantee it will work. So i decided to use Batteries. Why not choosing the easy way, heh?
Another change in plans is, that i dont build the simulator on my own. A good friend of mine (who is a professional locksmith) is realy excited about this project and he is willing to help me(we already spend some time on this). Additionaly, i asked another friend, who is studying engineering, and he is excited and willing to help, as well. He already introduced this to some of his fellow students, even if i didnt asked him to do so. So i have some really nice feedback from professional people.
The bad news is, that my SSD broke a few days ago *cry*, and with it my latets CAD design were lost. Need to wait a few days till the new SSD arrives and some more days to bring the CAD data up to date.
