Polulu 12V wiper 2DOF for the heavier driver

Postby ScottSim » Thu 14. Feb 2013, 00:26

Hello X-Simers, here is my 2DOF wiper build;
"My Goal'' to build a cost effective full motion sim, I have good mechanical skills and reasonable electrical. 3 Kids and little time, this build cost aprox $500 in material and 3 Months of weekends (part days) to build. Was fun to build and this forum is great support.

1070
(my seven year old in initial testing)

Ok I am 110kg (that my son in the seat) and read a lot of excellent info here, had a tight budget so wished to build something that would work for me now and still cost effective. I used 12v passenger car wiper motors; however they drive the sim via a basic leverage set up. The leverage linkage does drop the overall throw of the wipers but increases output.

Shopping list

Wheel and pedals (old Logiteck Momo, $100, want G27)

22'monitor, (bigger would be better but was $50, 2nd hand)

Frame is 25x25x3mm box (all steel and roll of GOOD gasless mig wire ($130) , FYI; found for amateur, better welds with gas-less mig, much better than gas if using a cheaper welder (180amp). can add dimensions if required;

Parts from local car recycle (wrecking yard, go to a wrecker that allows you to wonder, let them know what you want the parts for and get them for little dollars)

2 x near new wiper motors (mine just out of two Kia Rio's, same models and near new $25 each)

4 x sway bar links (cheap ball links cost 4 for $10)

old tail shaft (for uni joint, 3 in shaft $10)

Seat out of 2010 Ford Focus (great condition $50, race seat soon to come)

2 x Commodore (any fine) bonnet hinges (why take time fabricating steel when you can find something that you could easily mod? + is green, recycle hey?). these I used to make some levers to lower load on wiper motors (pivot lever driven off wiper motor)

2 x Polulu Jrk's. Mounted in cheap container, with some leds (no need for leds, just for fun). These as stated by those who know are easy to set up and little fuss to get functioning. ($200 for both)

2 x 10k pots, i drive these straight off the back of the wiper crown wheel ($5 each)

2 x USB 2 to mini usb cables ($10, don't use one from camera or phone)

Power supply, new 270CCA 12v car batt ($70)

550w PC PSU from local computer recyclers (never been used $15). Heaps of u-tube vids on how to mod, my output to assist batt, 12v 22amps

Battery box ($20, good if you setting up inside, acid etc)

1079

The base frame is fabricated from 50mm x 50mm steel fence posts, have also used 30mm x 30mm box for cross brace that also holds the tail shaft uni

I wished to make the sim easy to move and semi disassemble, the drive unit (wiper motors) is designed to come out with ease for repair replace/testing.

The sim splits into two halves by removing 6 nuts, 4 on the tail shaft and 2 from the wiper linkage.

I drilled out the wiper motor cans for cooling, some plumbing pipe will slip over the top with some CPU fans to draw air from the holes in the botom

1086

Frame befor seat fitted, the frame is a mixture of 25mm and 30mm box and becouse I am 110kg, built as lite as posible

1082

The car seat fitted up well (ensure you well isolate air bag and seat tensioners)

1083

More to come - :roll:

Lookin very good indeed, compact and good looking design too, which is kinda rare since most of home made sims look lake scrap heap challenge project :D

Can't wait to see it in motion!

I have also had 110kg+ on a wiper sim with jrks. Good balance and it moved him fine.
Yes and "junk yard" sims can look great, just some more care in tiding up the materials.
Goodness knows 90% of materials used on mine were recycled.
As said, you have done well.

Ok, will record and upload, can we just upload to X-Sim here or do I have to put on Utube and link?
In regards to doese it work, sure does, I was really concerned wipers would not be powerfull enogh and as Motiondave has said, they are even without the linkage.

For me, i am still playing with profiles and prefer less throw is more comfortable, what you will see in the vid is ussing little less than half the throw.

BTW; have moved to a half decent wheel (G27) made huge diference + 32'' led lcd TV, from Kogan (Aust) $311 delivered and is fantastic runs via HDMI no probs :lol:

ok, off to record

Cheers

Hi Guys,
Vid of first test;

Here is a video I have just uploaded, it was taken when I managed to get my first profile going, so does not show new monitor or g27, but you get the idea.
I will record another when I get the chance.
My 7 year old driving Race 07, it does perform well with rFactor and I chose FOV 35 internal view.
Ferslash, hope this gives a good understanding of the linkages at work.
Once again thanks to those who are so helpfull with answers,
Cheers,

that moves really well.
congratulations.
On and the 7 year old will be a professional in no time.
I have been using my son since he was 7 to test my sims as well.
he is 9 turning 10 and a legend driver.
Great stuff!
