I may have just answered my own question. Can somebody confirm?

According to http://www.ehow.com/how_5836253_calculate-phase-motor-power-consumption.html

...the answer is neither.

P=VA x sqrt3, for 3-phase. I knew that once upon a time... :) So,
-1/4 hp 3-phase 220V AC motor = 186W ==> A=186 / (220 x sqrt3). So, A=0.5A.
-therefore, house 220V socket line draw=1.5A (3x0.5)?

Is that right?

Hi Turn,
You can find attached the datasheet from an inverter and the current input and output needed.
It's quiet what you calculated but just for the nominal use (1400 tr/min)
Best Regards

What do you consider "cheap"? I mean just the motor. I haven't found anything cheap yet.

Do you think using a cheap 3-phase induction motor designed for constant speed operation (like for pumps/fans) is going to hold up on an x-sim rig where often it'll be near 0 RPM with no fan cooling effect to help it....in addition to the normal drive inverter voltage spikes it also is not designed to withstand? Everything I'm reading says you need to use an inverter or vector duty motor with inverter drives (which are $$$ expensive) or you're asking for trouble because their insulation breaks down. And also most of these general purpose AC motors are not designed for frequent direction changes. I'm sure they'll do it, but for how long?

Do they exaggerate?

One link here, but I've read many others: http://motors.automationdirect.com/Information/compare.html

The motors are usually cheap enough, it's the Helical gearbox to attach to it that's the expensive bit.

I'm possibly not the best one to answer this as I have only researched the build of an AC motor based simulator and have not built one. Perhaps other owners of AC motor based simulators will add their comments ......

Look up the specification of the SEW Eurodrive motors that CKAS use, they are just straight forward motors with nothing special in their design. Looking at the various AC motor simulators in these pages most of the designs are using motors with similar or matching specifications, just that they are often obtained from other sources. Not surprising when you see the prices that SEW Eurodrive quote.

A few of the designs are from French members and they have sourced motor/gearbox units from a French supplier that are much cheaper than SEW.

What I haven't yet seen are any postings about early failures of the AC motors and I'm sure that something would have cropped up before now if this was indeed a problem ?

Hello folks,
I'm in the process of sourcing all the parts needed for a "CKAS type" platform.
I spent 4 months researching motors and gearheads - talking with many manufacturers and local motor repair services.
In summary, for longevity - Inverter duty motors are the only way to go.
I purchased the Marathon MicroMax, 1.hp, 1800 rpm - they cost about 270.00 us ea - I found two of them, brand new, on eBay for 100.00 us each.

http://www.automationdirect.com/adc/Sho ... 25_-_300HP)/AC_Motors_-_Inverter_Duty,_Marathon_(0.25_-_100HP)/Marathon_MicroMAX_(0.25HP_to_10HP)

Gearheads - SEW was out of site on price - and again, after research and talking with many, I went with Boston Gearheads, worm type.
They list new for about 1100.00 US, but I found brand new ones on eBay for about 110.00 US.....60:1 ratio.

So, "me thinks" that I have done well with my motors/gearheads.....just shop til you drop.

PS - I did find Chinese ones, motor w/helical gearhead for 450.00 US - however, no one in the US services those and the shipping alone was over 400.00 US EACH from China - which would make the cost of 850.00 US per motor.

Good luck,
cthiggin

So, if one was to find a good AC 115V 1Phase motor, with the proper Gearbox, how can they be controlled?
Do we need an inverter?
I read someone indicating that we can use a Variable Frequency Drive to get those going, am I mistaken?
Could we be using using the Thanos board AMC for example, to control the motors directly?

I am about to purchase some Marathon 1HP motors, with proper gearboxes.
I just want to make sure that I am not wasting money... :)
Thank you.

Thank you!
So if I understand correctly, the chain is:
PC with X-Sim > AMC Controller > Inverter 3Ph > 3Ph AC Motor?

Merci becaucoup!
