Think of how this type of mouse trap works. The spring is wrapped around the pivot axis, which then uses torsion as opposed to tension or compression to store energy in the spring. The spring then exerts a downward force on the base and an upward force on the bar.

Scale this up to the size of a sim rig and the upward force the spring is exerting is now counteracting the downward force from the weight of the motion platform and rider. This is also how garage doors hold the weight of the door, making it possible to open/close them single handedly.


1. man wow, using sketup to simulate movement... wow, google should hire you :D

2. i really liked your idea about the springs, i was seeing countlees garage videos :D

3. i have a silly question :D i get the stuff about the springs helping to "cary" the weight of the sim driver, so the motor need less force to "lift" the drivers weight...

* but, if the sim needs to be taken down? the spring would not act in the oposite way, difficulting the task? so the motor will need more force to lower the sime?

Hold a mouse trap on end, push the bar half way down. The bar should still be applying an uppward force on your finger.
The spring is 'wound up' so it's still under tension even when the trap is closed (or held half way).

Same principle with a motion rig. The spring would be 'wound up' so that it's always exerting an upward force on the lever arm, no matter its position.

The tricky part will be knowing how much to wind up the spring so the forces are balanced enough for a small motor to deal with any remaining imbalance (for instance if a heavier/lighter driver uses the rig).
