3D Printed Wiper Motor Mounts

Postby ibnzmonkey » Tue 9. Sep 2014, 18:44

I started building my 2DOF a few weeks ago. I have amassed most of the parts required. Although, I'm still saving up for a Rift DK2. I noticed that through most of the 2DOF builds I've seen that the motors are usually supported by right angle flanges from HD or some other structurally questionable method. I then remembered that I was a mechanical engineer

I ordered these motors from Wondermotor.

A few hours later after working in Solidworks I designed these mounts and performed an FEA to check for potential problems. After a few revisions I printed these out on my Makerbot Gen V. With .1mm resolution and 75% infill these are very sturdy. The real test is going to be when they get mounted and start getting really used. FEA can only tell you so much.

The white one is the latest revision. It has some more solid mounting feet and is a little beefier overall. There is slots for band clamps or large zip ties to hold the motor down and the face bolts to the upper support. I really cant wait to try it out. I have just a few more things to figure out before I start building the actual platform.

They weigh about .5 Kilo and the material cost is about $10 USD to print. However, it takes about 60 hours to make just ONE.
