need opinions on NPC-64038 wheelchair motors

Postby CorvairNut » Fri 12. Apr 2013, 20:28

Hello all. I'm planning to start building my motion platform soon. My build will be used for both driving and flying so I will need decent travel for the flying. This is a budget build so please keep cost in mind when giving advice.

I have obtained (through a friend) a pair of wheelchair motors NPC-64038. These are 24 volt motors, 230 RPM, 1.6 hp. I was told the gearboxes are probably 33:1 ratio.

These are a lot more powerful than the ones Floriske used in his build but I will have longer travel so I probably need more power. I am told that I can run these on 12v instead of 24v and probably still have more than enough power.. what do you think?

Any advice on how to power these (keeping price reasonable)? I assume powering them at 12v will be cheaper and probably work fine?

Thanks,

Ray R.

if you use these motors, power wise.
12v , arduino and 12v h-brdges or JRKS, car battery with 20 amp PSU in parallel.
24v , arduino and 24v h-bridges with 24 truck battery and suitable PSU in parallel.
Scan the ard thread for more info on suitable h-brdges for 12 and 24v.
For simplicity in 12v, I suggest JRKS.

Thanks, JRK's were the way I was expecting to go, but since the possible 24 volt idea didn't come up until I got these motors cheap I hadn't looked into it and didn't realize the JRK's were no good with 24 volt.

I think it would be cheaper and simpler to use them at 12 volt, and I expect they would still be powerful enough but really that is a WAG.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm building the Thanos (Tronicgr)'s H-Bridge. Well, I planned to use it on 12V wipers. However I've found in its documentation:
Although the DSMhb1.2b is designed to work with 12V wiper motors mainly, it can handle larger motors too (200W or 25A/24V)

My plan is to connect it into the Arduino (open source) solution.

Hi

Have you seen the now Vex was Texas Instruments Black Jaguar 24 volt 40 amp cont, 90 amp burst, Position control mode, pot or encoder feedback $60.00

Use's Serial to Can Bus bridge, so would require a plugin for X sim, controllers can be daisy chained, also it might be possible to run car instruments off the Can Bus ?

regards Terry

Terry, that sounds interesting but I don't know the terminology. I have to google "can bus" to find out what that is... is the plugin readily available and reliable?
