I have a non-steam edition, my desktop link have the exe in it, not the steam ID, but I've seen that in my installation folder there is a steam_api.dll. Maybe it's just some system file needed for starting the game, I don't * However, I was still not able to make the thing works.

did you try to copy paste the dirt 2 plug in out outsim into the program folder of f1?
Sometimes you have to do that.
You can find the dirt2 plug in and outsim in the plugins of x-sim.

The hardware file likes right.

What do you mean with "out outsim"? I noticed that in my installation folders the dirt2 plugin was missing, so I added it by myself, but nothing changed. I have even disabled the firewall, but no luck again. What's the next step?

Maybe you mean that little client with the red icon! Nope, that one I didn't put in the installation folder, when I get back home I will try.
